Franklin County

Vermont's Rapid-Growth Center

Vermont takes great pride in its dairy farms and "milky" heritage. Franklin County leads Vermont in dairy and in maple syrup production.

Manufacturing, trade, service industries, and importing also have a crucial role in the Franklin County economy. We have easy access to the rest of the world via Interstate, U.S. Highways, and the NECR railroad. Manufacturing accounts for more than 25 percent of the non-farm jobs in Franklin County. The county's largest employers, including name brands such as Ben and Jerry's, Comet Confectionary, Fonda Group, and Wyeth, produce paper and plastic products, processed foods, and of course ice cream and other dairy specialties. Many of Franklin County's manufacturers are located in industrial parks in Enosburg, Georgia, Highgate, Richford, St Albans, and Swanton. Customshouse brokers like A. N. Deringer and Fritz Companies handle large scale commercial importing and the Immigration and Naturalization Service maintains a principal processing center here.

Retailers have also grown quickly along the I-89 corridor. Retail centers such as the St Albans and Enosburg areas attract not only Vermont customers but also significant business from Canadians and from tourists worldwide.

Franklin County enjoys 4-season activities on terrain ranging from Lake Champlain to the Green Mountains. We host Vermont's largest agricultural exposition (Franklin County Field Days), an active arts council, diverse ethnic endeavors, and a major concert site made famous by the Grateful Dead.

Franklin County anticipates continuing population growth and job creation. Real estate prices are low; conscientious schools, great recreation, and agreeable neighbors stimulate this expansion.
